Read the Notice of Intent to Sue. The Liberty Center is suing Kaiser for performing gender reassignment surgery and providing hormones and mental health care for a child. The surgery was done with parental consent but at age 13. Treatment continued until age 17. This lawsuit raises incredibly difficult issues for physicians. Would the refusal to treat with hormones or surgery constitute patient abandonment ? Who decides whether a surgical or hormonal option should start as the child’s brain and body are changing ? There are political and social issues but from a physician’s perspective this can become a minefield.
